Particles

Particles are one of the primary ways Salish organizes experience within discourse. Rather than functioning only as small “helper words,” particles actively shape how events, relations, awareness, stance, emotion, time, certainty, attention, and experiential positioning are understood within the conversational field. A particle may anchor something into present experience, open or close uncertainty, organize attention, intensify realization, direct relational orientation, or frame how a speaker stands toward what is being said.

Unlike English, where much of this organization is carried through sentence structure or implied context, Salish frequently makes these experiential relations structurally visible through particles. Many particles are not arbitrary lexical items but organized orientational structures built from smaller recurring elements called orientors. These orientors contribute consistent experiential functions across the language. For example, one orientor may contribute openness, another maintained presence, another return or re-engagement, and another exact focused presentation. As particles combine, these orientational contributions remain active and interact together within larger discourse structures.

Particles may occur as single orientors, particle compounds, or larger particle complexes. A particle compound is typically the pairing of two orientor particles functioning together as a stable experiential orientation. These compounds may then combine with additional particles or compounds to form larger particle complexes. The meaning of these forms emerges not from isolated dictionary definitions alone, but from how the orientors organize together within the experiential field. This is why the segmented writing used in this grammar is important: it preserves the visible structure of the particle system and helps reveal how the orientors continue contributing meaning within larger constructions.

Older orthographic conventions often obscured these internal structures by compressing particles into apparently indivisible words. In many cases, forms that appear to be single lexical items are actually layered experiential constructions organizing attention, realization, uncertainty, manifestation, relational extension, evidentiality, emotional force, or shared awareness. One goal of this grammar is to make these orientational structures visible again so that learners can begin to see how Salish discourse organizes lived experience through the particle system.

This website represents decades of listening, study, comparison, analysis, organization, and ongoing refinement. Work such as the particle system presented here is not produced quickly. It reflects many years spent learning from elders, recordings, speakers, written materials, language programs, and continued structural investigation across the Salish languages.
