-ew̓ɬ, watercraft

The lexical suffix -ew̓ɬ is a compound of -ew̓ (“central, between, pass through”) and (“functioning at/for some purpose, kind”). It literally expresses “that which centrally passes through or between things for a purpose.” In Salish, it most often refers to watercraft, because boats inherently operate between shores, pass through water, and serve a transportive purpose.

In other Salishian dialects, this same conceptual structure naturally extends to vehicles of all kinds—anything designed to pass through space between two points (roads, trails, land routes), functioning for movement or transport. The same core meaning applies: an object that embodies central passage through a medium (water, land, air) to achieve its designed purpose of transport.

In Salish, the word for vehicle is more commonly expressed through sqáx̌eɁ (“domestic animal; vehicle”) and its shortened form sqa, which then takes various prefixes to describe different vehicle types. However, understanding the literal meaning of -ew̓ɬ helps learners see why it also validly extends to the concept of vehicles: both boats and vehicles share the core function of purposeful movement through space between two points.
